Young people in rural areas have often found themselves marginalized both by decisions on the formulation and development of rural policy and by decision-making processes related to youth policy. However, young people and women in the rural areas are more profoundly affected than other young people by the transitions taking place in contemporary society. CIDD-UG is aware that the changes lying ahead in rural areas of Uganda will have a fundamental impact on the opportunities available to young people and women who continuing to live in the rural areas.
In comparison with urban, rural areas are still short of the necessary communication tools and resources that benefit young people and women. These therefore demands that interventions meant to provide information should focus on rural youth and women, for example by relocating developmental information and intervention offices to rural areas, as this will help young people and women to access critical development information and skills that empowers them to play their roles and responsibilities within the constitutional limits.
It has been against such background that Rural Democracy Ride (RDR) has been planned as a vehicle to deliver civic education information by young people for young people and their communities. It is for such reasons that CIDD-UG continues to plan and provide useful civic messages to young people but also engage them as civic educators rather than just recipients of civic education messages. This in a medium term is helping to build a strong spirit on Nationalism among young people in the project area and the country at large.
