Namuddu Sumayah the youth focal person CIDD-UG – (front Standing) facilitating a community session on how to build trust and understanding between young males and females within their communities and families so as to reduce GBV in Buseta sub county Kibuku District -December 2020

CIDD-UG used Active Citizen Model to deliver community sessions against SGBV with the objective of contributing to promotion of increased community connections against SGBV and increasing health seeking behaviors. These community sessions that targeted 90 young men and some of their parents helped empower communities and or young men through building trust and understanding with their peers to engage peacefully but also effectively for sustainable development of their communities.

CIDD-UG is also alive to the fact that Gender based violence is in general related to a predominant cultural model based on maleness which was only worsened by the lock down. The fight against sexual gender based violence either against women or young Girls cannot therefore leave out consideration of engaging young men to peacefully take actions that eliminate cultural aspects that down grade or discriminate women or young girls in the society, a reason as to why CIDD-UG focused on young men.

The community out reaches carried out by CIDD-UG equally empowered women and young girls, traditional and cultural institution to positively address underlying causes of VAWG and harmful practices, including discriminatory social and socio-cultural norms, stereotypes, and unequal power relations that have left majority women and young girls at the disadvantaged position in the communities.

The community outreaches by CIDD-UG helped young woman and men to understand their rights roles and responsibilities and become more articulate to hold a healthy discussion while respecting one another’s views in a home, something that is expected to contribute to SGBV reduction and increasing Health seeking behaviors among Buseta communities.
